About Lockwood Vineyard

Our Property

Lockwood Vineyard was initially a 25 acre family owned mixed farming property which was later developed as a mixed fruit orchard. When we first saw the property in August 2003 it still had a few old apricot trees, about 200 cherry trees of various ages and 6 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon vines.

The house pictured on our label is a very small 19th century 'pise' cottage which is used as our home. The Lockwood wine label was painted by our good friend and local artist , Ann Smith. It is a fairly accurate representation of the proximity of the vines to our dwelling.

The property now comprises 20 acres and has approximately 5000 vines with three varieties of red grapes (Cab Sav, Shiraz and Tempranillo) and four white varieties (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Pinot Gris). The vines are planted on North facing slopes which provide ample sunshine as well as good cold air drainage. The soil is a deep vibrant red clay loam derived from weathered granite and wind blown deposits. The long term annual average rainfall is just over 600mm with most of the rain falling in winter. The Hilltops region provides rich soil and a wonderful cool climate which favour the development of healthy vines and the production of premium wines.
